Ryan Residence

Externally the design of this Residence has taken tried and true coastal Architecture to new levels. Dynamic exterior features, shapes and lines in association with the use of bold colours belie the true simplicity of this Residence. Innovative planning has assured this home is truly multi-functional with a flow pattern that creates an ambience of relaxation and easy living that allows the vast panorama of the outside, in and decks that take the inside out. This residence is fully in touch with its surrounds and responds to all the demands asked of it.

Our clients outgoing personality was to be reflected in a Multi-functional 3 Bedroom Beach House that ensured flexibility in association with privacy. The house was to be very Modern Contemporary having striking and dynamic shapes, lines and colours, whilst maximizing ocean views. Garaging and Boat storage were an important consideration.

The slightly elevated block afforded spectacular ocean views from an Upper Level, south across street frontage. At this level is located the main Living/Dining/Kitchen and Master Bedroom areas. The open planned level is further extended both ends with Decks. The South deck with canopy is primarily for viewing but offers respite from intense sun whilst the North deck is for the sun-lovers and overlooks the backyard.
A spiral stair from this deck was implored to directly link with this space. Interior curved walls contrast with the dramatic exterior lines and reflects the coastal ambience in a flowing link between these two extremes. The extensive use of glass to this level allows views through the entire area in both directions from all positions. The Master Bedroom, with ocean views, is very private and is a restful retreat sanctum whilst Guests enjoy the whole house as well as the privacy of their own inner sanctums at Ground Level.

The Ground level incorporates the 3 car Garaging with thru-way access to a secure Boat storage area. Garage/s are provided with direct access to Residence. The Entry, at this level, flows into the centrally located Rumpus Room that provides common link between the Double Bedrooms located at each end.

To ensure flexibility and multi-function, ALL Bedrooms are provided with En-suites and Walk-in-Robes and separated by distance for added privacy.

The use of cantilevers, angled walls/roofs and offsets to the exterior were implored to add the dynamics and interest to the visual pleasure and intrigue. To capulate the earth and sea environs a mixture of external finishes/claddings in conjunction with bold colours were used. The articulation of splayed walls, canopies and Entry door added the adventurous and escapism inference.

Softer lines and the continuation with bold colours added the relaxed atmosphere with a sense of excitement.

Open planning of both levels in association with simple construction and the employment of cost effective materials allowed the incorporation of special features whilst ensuring budgets would be kept. Canvas was used in small quantities to bind the structural elements and compliment the nautical theme.
